AFC-KUALA LUMPUR: The return of Europe-based stars to the domestic scene will boost Iranian clubs’ chances to do well in the AFC Champions League, believes Iranian goalkeeping legend Jalal Basharzad.Former Team Melli captain Mehdi Mahdavikia followed in the footsteps of Ali Karimi and became the latest star to come back home by joining Steel Azin from German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Talking to www.the-afc.com on the sidelines of the AFC Elite Goalkeeper Course here on Friday, Basharzad felt that ‘Kia’ and Co.’s return will pay rich dividends to Iranian football.

“Despite their advancing age, they are still fine players. I believe they can be good role models for the younger players,” said the 46-year-old.

The Team Melli custodian from 1985 to 1998 added, “Our young players are immature and this has more to do with the lack of guidance from respected figures in the game. The experience of these stars will be invaluable for them.”

“Besides seeking more playing time, I feel that it was also the right time for them to return home after being away for such a long period,” he added.

The former Homa, Pas and Saipa player is now working for Iranian Pro League club Shahin as a goalkeeper coach. His impressive playing career has seen him play in the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games and the 1996 AFC Asian Cup Finals.

Basharzad was very positive about the future of Iranian football, particularly with the return of these stars.

“Afshin Ghotbi (national team coach) doesn’t need to worry much about calling up Europe-based players anymore. When everyone is here, it is also easier for coordination.”

“You will see a very competitive Iranian outfit if Steel Azin qualify for ACL 2011. The star players’ return will not only boost the Iranian club’s strength but also rebuild the image of Persian football.”
