(persianfootballcenter, Afshin Dastafshan)  Week 28 of Persian Gulf League (PGL) concluded with leaders Sepahan and second place Saba battery dropping points at home.  Third place Persepolis ended a run of poor results with a 2-0 win over Malavan to close the gap on table toppers Sepahan to 5 points.  With 6 games remaining and a possible 18 points up for grabs the league looks like a three horse race between Sepahan, Saba Battery and Persepolis, whilst the likes of Esteghlal Ahvaz, Paas and Abumoslem have a mathematical chance of winning the league the odds are stacked against them as they would need several favours from other teams to take point from the top 3 sides.

The team that continues to puzzle me is the current PGL champions Saipa, they went down 2-0 to Bargh Shiraz. This result pushed Bargh up to 9th place while Saipa dropped to 12th place.  Saipa are one of Iran’s representatives in the Asian Champions League (ACL) and have indeed got off to a good start in their campaign, Saipa lead ACL Group B on 7 points with two wins a draw, however in PGL they are 15 points adrift of the leaders, Saipa have never recovered from losing players such as Khalili during last summer’s transfer and failure to strengthen their squad with new players to defend their PGL championship title.  In contrast Hazfi Cup holders Sepahan have had a poor run of results in ACL and are currently bottom of Group A with one win and two defeats but they have done well in PGL.  Both sides will be in action in Asia this week on Wednesday April 23rd.

Firouz Karimi managed to lift Esteghlal spirits on arrival at the club but their recent run of poor results including last week’s 4-1 defeat at home to Pegah has seen the Tehran giants drop to 8th place in the table and out of contention for PGL championship, Esteghlal lost 2-0 to Abumoslem, Mr Mazloumi has done well for Abumoslem since taking over from Azizi at the helm.

PGL week 28 results:

Sepahan 1 - Mes 1
Peykan 2 - Zob-Ahan 0
Saba 2 - Shirin-Faraz 2
Rah-Ahan 0 - Pas-Hamedan 0
Pegah 1 - Est-Ahvaz 1
Abumoslem 2 - Esteghlal 0
Bargh 2 - Saipa 0
Perspolis 2 - Malavan 0
Sanat-Naft 1 - Fajr-Sepasi 1
