The Iceland coach actually named two squads today, one for the game with Iran and another for a friendly against Luxembourg (14th Nov). All the major players are in the squad for the Luxembourg game :Eidur Gudjohnsen, Hermann Hreidarsson, Gretar Rafn Steinsson, Brynjar Bjorn Gunnarsson................. the squads are on the IA Akranes message board www.freewebs.com/iauk

Thanks Mike. Why do you think Iceland are sending a 'B' team to Iran? Surely their 'A' team would benefit more from a friendly against a tougher opposition than against Luxembourg.

I don't think the date of the Iran game is an offical FIFA date for internationals so i would imagine the clubs will not release the players. The players in the squad for the Iran game, there leagues will have ended for the winter break. I will try to check the FIFA dates

14 - 18th November are the FIFA international dates for November so that explains why the premiership, danish and french based players are not in squad

Ah yes. Thanks.
You see how wonderful our federation is? All through spring and summer with all FIFA dates for games and loads and loads of friendlies, Iran did not have a single one while all our competitors and rivals had loads of games arranged.
No one wants to play Iran which is quite OK with the Arab invaders currently in power in Iran.

Thanks for the update iauk, the A Team would have been better, I am not sure if Iran will use any of their European based players

With Iran Football federation you are never sure who will be in the team, but I suppose the squad will be announced about a week before the game.
the game will be played in the Azadi stadium in Tehran. Its official capacity is 100,000 but for important games it can easily reach 120,000. Iranians are totally football crazy but only for important games. I would be surprised if more than 15,000 turn up for the Iceland game.

would have been better if the game was in a smaller stadium, no atmosphere in a 100,000 capacity with just 15,000 people watching

I agree with iauk, smaller stadium would be better, but Azadi has the best lighting and the best turf in Iran
